Graphite is an abundant material that can be found all over the world and has even been found on meteorites. An interstellar mineral, probably as old as time itself. Treasured for its color and softness, graphite was first used by humans as a pigment and is now applied for many industrial uses. As a material for art and education, however, it has contributed to our evolution as a species in insurmountable ways.

The next step in my work with graphite is to collect it myself. The search begins with abandoned mines in the northern New Mexico region where graphite is said to be found. The simple act of hand-collecting bioregionally sourced material adds invaluable dimension and intimacy to this work.
