Charcoal, along with the other media I choose to work with, is one of the most primitive art materials known to humankind. Dating back to the earliest humans, our ancestors discovered the benefits of charcoal and began utilizing it in multiple ways, such as cooking, heating, writing, drawing, water filtration, and even as a medicine.
It is created by charring wood or other organic materials, resulting in a stick or powder that can be manipulated easily on paper. I use charcoal for drawing, sketching, and shading due to its rich black color and ability to create a wide range of tones. Its soft texture allows for easy blending and smudging, making it ideal for creating dynamic and expressive works of art, conveying depth, contrast, and texture in its creations.
Charcoal allows me to convey somatic experiences that other media have difficulty representing in the same way.
